THE JUDICIARY OF ZANZIBAR

DISCLOSURE OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL SAFEGUARDS DOCUMENTS

The judiciary is a system of courts that interprets, defends and applies the law according to the constitution. Hence it is a mechanism for the dispute resolution, and applies the law to the facts of each case.

ABOUT ZANZIBAR JUDICIAL MODERNIZATION PROJECT (Zi-JUMP)

Zi-JUMP Project aims to enhance and strengthen the judicial system in Zanzibar through the improvement of infrastructure and access to justice for all. The Project Development Objective (PDO) of the project is “to enhance the accessibility, efficiency, and transparency of selected judicial services in Zanzibar” with the identified indicators of achievement of (a) accessibility of court services; (b) efficiency in delivering court services; (c) citizen satisfaction with court services delivery; and (d) transparency in court services delivery. At this juncture, the Judiciary of Zanzibar is hereby disclosing four documents related to the Environmental and Social Safeguards; these are:

  1. ENVIRONMENTAL and SOCIAL COMMITMENT PLAN (ESCP) sets out material measures and actions that the Judiciary shall carry out or cause to be carried out, including, as applicable, the time frames of the actions and measures, institutional, staffing, training, monitoring and reporting arrangements, and grievance management. It also sets out the environmental and social (E&S) instruments that shall be adopted and implemented under the Project. Download

  2. STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT PLAN (SEP) provides programs for stakeholder engagement, including public information disclosure and consultation throughout the entire project cycle. It outlines the ways in which the project team will communicate with stakeholders and includes a mechanism by which people can raise concerns, provide feedbacks, or make complaints about project activities or any activities related to the project. Download

  3. ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK (ESMF) sets out principles, rules, guidelines and procedures to assess the environmental and social risks and impacts. Also contains measures and plans to reduce, mitigate and/or offset adverse risks and impacts, provisions for estimating and budgeting the costs of such measures, and information on the agency or agencies responsible for addressing project risks and impacts, including on its capacity to manage environmental and social risks and impacts. Download

  4. LABOUR MANAGEMENT PLAN (LMP) supports the labour due diligence provisions for project activities to ensure that the Project is carried out in accordance with the Environmental and Social Standards (ESSs) and in a manner acceptable to the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (RGoZ). LMP also provides the code of conduct for both contractors and workers. Download
